Malaysia: Singaporean man swept away by waves at beach, found dead

The body of a Singaporean man, who had been missing after being swept away on Wednesday (December 27, 2023) while playing with his son at the Desaru in Malaysia’s Bandar Penawar town, has been found.

The deceased has been identified as 49-year-old Isaac Kelvin Tan Lee Thong.

Quoting Penawar Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Masri Ibrahim, Lianhe Zaobao confirmed the news.

Authorities have confirmed that man had drowned.

His body was found by an unnamed person at the beach area of One&Only Desaru Coast resort at 5:30 am on Thursday (December 28, 2023), the rescue official said.

His body was identified by his family.

Speaking to Mothership, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson stated they bereaved family would receive consular assistance and support through the Singapore Consulate-General in Johor Bahru.

“MFA extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family. MFA would also like to thank the Johor authorities, in particular the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), for their search and rescue efforts over the last two days,” the spokesperson said.

16-year-old son rescued

Not just the man, his son, Gabriel Ian Tan Way Ping, was also swept away by the waves. Fortunately for the 16-year-old, he received assistance and was rescued.

As per reports, the teenager had troubles while trying to swim as the water currents were strong.
