Nearly 89 per cent of over 170,000 students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) globally have recently received their IB Diploma Programme (DP), and Career-related Programme (CP) results for the May 2021 exam session.
Despite COVID-19 posing challenges for students, teachers and schools throughout the world in the past 18 months, their hard work and dedication towards education did not falter.
The IB provided a dual assessment route to ensure all students have the opportunity to graduate; and examination route for those schools who could safely administer it; a non-examination route for those schools who could not hold eams due to local restrictions.
"Globally the situation, for over 170,000 students in more than 3000 schools, is complex and differs greatly – the IB wants to ensure that schools can follow their local guidelines whilst also ensuring their students have a way to complete their IB programme" an official statement read.
The results declared showed the IBDP pass percentage seeing a big jump from 85.18 per cent to 88.96 per cent this year.
According to official IB data, the number of candidates for the May 2021 session was 170,660 and for the May 2020 session was 174,360. Out of 170,660 students, 104,275 were in the non-exam route and 65,576 in the exam route and 809 were split between both routes.
The number of the Diploma Programme candidates for the May 2021 session was 87,307 as compared to 86,657 in May 2020 session. The average diploma score for the May 2021 session is 33.02 points up from 31.34 in May 2020.
The number of students achieving 40-45 points is 15,513, up from 9,701 in May 2020. The average diploma grade is 5.19, up from 4.95 in May 2020. The diploma pass rate is 88.96 per cent up from 85.18 per cent in May 2020.
Anoushka Shetty, student of India’s Victorious Kidss Educares (VKE), scored a perfect 45/45 marks to emerge among the IB World Toppers in the grade 12 board examinations of International Baccalaureate (IB).
Three of the other top scorers achieved a commendable 42 points out of a possible 45 (three students – 93.3%).
Other high scoring students included six who attained above 37 points.
Meanwhile, as many as 23 students of Global Indian International School (GIIS) in Singapore have also emerged among world toppers and with near-perfect scores in the IBDP exam.
At least 11 students ranked as world toppers in the exams scoring 45/45 in the finals, while 12 students were near-perfect scorers with a result of 44/45, the GIIS said in a statement.
The GIIS school average has now climbed to 38.52 grade points.
“This is a stupendous result for GIIS in a year of pandemic-related difficulties,” said Melissa Maria, Principal of the GIIS SMART Campus.
“Considering the unprecedented circumstances the students (and teachers) have experienced in the last 2 years of their diploma programme, we have achieved a phenomenal milestone,” she added.
