According to media reports, fugitive Indian businessman Vijay Mallya has filed papers win the UK high court seeking permission to appeal against the bankruptcy ruling handed down in July.
Chief Insolvencies and Companies Court (ICC) Judge Michael Briggs had declared Mallya bankrupt on July 26. His creditors, comprising a consortium of Indian banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI), had been pursuing a bankruptcy order in the UK in relation to a judgment debt which stands at over GBP 1 billion.
According to a report in the Times of India, Mallya's legal team had filed a notice seeking permission to appeal the ruling despite an appeal plea being denied on July 26.
Another judge will decide whether the permission to appeal should be granted, which would lead to a full appeal hearing, sources said.
The 65-year-old businessman, meanwhile, remains on bail in the UK while a "confidential" legal matter, believed to be related to an asylum application, is resolved in connection with the unrelated extradition proceedings.
