US: Indian-origin student injured after he was attacked, robbed in Chicago

An Indian-origin man was injured after he was attacked and robbed of his phone by armed men in Chicago city of the USA.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Syed Mazadahir Ali was reportedly attacked when he was going home.

“This is something I cannot forget. He was holding a gun on me, and two more on my head. This, and one more here,” Ali was quoted as saying by ABC7Chicago.

A part of the attack on the Indian-origin student was caught on a neighbour’s surveillance camera.

The Indian student is currently pursuing his master’s degree at Indiana Wesleyan University in Chicago.

Wife writes to Indian External Affairs Minister

His wife Syeda Ruquliya Fatima Rizvi wrote a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and asked him to ensure that that  Ali gets proper treatment.

“I am very much worried about safety and security of my husband in Chicago, USA,” she wrote in the letter.

“I request you to kindly help him in getting best medical treatment and if possible kindly make necessary arrangements so I can travel to USA along with my three minor children to be with my husband,” she wrote.

Amjed Ullah Khan MBT, spokesperson, Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) posted on X: “.@DrSJaishankarSir, One Syed Mazahir Ali from Hyderabad, Telangana pursuing Masters in IT from Indiana Weslay University was robbed & attacked on 4th Feb by four persons in Chicago, Since this attack Syed Mazahir Ali is under mental shock and is in need of help.Ask @IndianEmbassyUS for @IndiainChicago to get in touch with him on+18472930666 or +13129348351 and provide medical & legal help. Indian Consulate in Chicago reacts

Meanwhile, the Indian Consulate in Chicago said it is in touch with Syed Mazahir Ali and his wife in India Syeda Ruquiya Fatima Razvi and assured all possible assistance.

“Consulate is in touch with Syed Mazahir Ali and his wife in India Syeda Ruquiya Fatima Razvi and assured all possible assistance. Consulate has also contacted the local authorities who are investigating the case,” India in Chicago posted on X.

Four Indian students were found dead this year

Meanwhile, four Indian students were found dead in the USA this year.

Last week, 19-year-old Shreyas Reddy Beniger, a student at the Linder School of Business in Ohio, was found dead.

Earlier that week, Purdue University student Neel Acharya was found dead on the university campus, hours after his mother had reported him missing.

Vivek Saini, from Haryana, was hammered to death by a homeless man in Georgia’s Lithonia on Jan 16.

Akul Dhawan, another Indian student, was found dead outside the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in January.
