Three new Zika cases confirmed at Glasgow Road

As of April 20, 2017, two cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection in Singapore have been confirmed at Glasgow Road area. Both cases are residents in the vicinity.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has commenced vector control operations and outreach efforts at the cluster area, the agency said in a press statement.

Another case was also been confirmed at Poh Huat Road West (Nouvelle Park). This therefore expands the original cluster at Poh Huat Terrace.

Residents and stakeholders are urged to maintain vigilance and continue to eliminate mosquito breeding habitats. Having mosquitoes in the vicinity might reult in further transmission of the virus, as there could still be asymptomatic or mild, undiagnosed cases.

Residents are requested to allow NEA officers to carry out inspections and indoor spraying of their homes.

Most infected patients with the Zika virus do not develop symptoms. This heightens the risk of a Zika resurgence, as it may take some time before a reintroduced Zika virus is detected. NEA reminded everyone to maintain vigilance and play a part to prevent future localised transmission through eradicating mosquito breeding habitats in the neighbourhoods.

NEA also advised members of the public are advised to seek medical attention if they are unwell. This is especially with symptoms such as fever and rash. They should also inform their doctors of the location of their residence and workplace.
