Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS) have risen one place to be ranked joint 11th in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) global league table of top universities. They are the joint highest ranked universities in Asia Pacific.
NTU has risen 62 places since 2009. This year, the biggest improvements were in research citations per faculty, which moved up ten positions to 36th, and employer reputation, which rose eight places to 35th. NTU's academic reputation climbed one place to 37th, while its international faculty ranking went up one place to 21st.
NTU received higher scores than NUS in faculty-to-student ratio and citations per faculty, an indicator of institutional research impact.
But NUS is better known among academics and employers than NTU, staying at 11th in the world for academic reputation with a score of 99.8, based on responses from over 94,000 academics.
An NUS spokesman said: "We are honoured that many academics and employers around the world continue to regard NUS as among the best in Asia and globally… The remarkable global standing of our local universities attests to the quality of Singapore's higher education system."
The world’s top 1,000 universities are ranked in the QS World University Rankings. Based on six performance indicators, universities are assessed in key areas of research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. www.topuniversities.com.
The top three institutions worldwide on the list are all from the United States: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Harvard University.
Amongst universities in India, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay was highest ranked at 152, followed by IIT, Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore at 182nd and 184th position respectively.
