Singapore: Driver fined S$3,000 for racial remarks at passenger over drop-off dispute, TADA bans him from platform

Words spoken in a fit of rage have come back to haunt a driver formerly associated with ride hailing service TADA. After pleading guilty to using insulting words and causing distress to one of his passengers, the 54-year-old driver was fined S$3,000 by the court on December 13, 2023, as per reports.

The actual incident took place earlier this year. A video shared by the passenger showed the driver, identified as Peh Boon Hua, hurling racial insults to the passenger.

He was heard labelling the passenger as an Indian and calling her “the very worst”, while claiming himself to be Chinese. This went on for nearly a minute as the woman passenger tried to reason with the driver, who was miffed with the drop-off miscommunication following a glitch in the app.

According to reports, the incident took place on September 23. The passenger, a 46-year-old woman, wanted to book a ride to Block 194, Pasir Ris Street 12. However, the glitch didn’t allow her and she set the drop-off location at Block 194, Pasir Ris Street 11.

A quarrel broke out when Google Maps didn’t show the entered address.

While the court gave its verdict, Peh Boon Hua also received a jolt from TADA, who terminated their contract with the driver permanently.

As per Mothership, a spokesperson of the company said, “The driver’s remarks that insinuated racial differences are completely unacceptable within TADA’s community guidelines and ethos.”
