At least seven newborns died in a massive fire that broke out at a children’s hospital in Delhi late Saturday, media reports said.

The Delhi Fire Services said it received a call about a fire at 11:32 pm at a baby care centre in the Vivek Vihar area in East Delhi, following which it sent as many as 16 fire tenders to the site.

Officials said that 12 newborns were rescued from the first floor of the building but seven died while getting treatment at the hospital.

Five children are currently being treated at the hospital.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to expresse his grief over the incident.

In a post on X, he wrote: “The fire tragedy at a hospital in Delhi is heart-rending. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this incredibly difficult time. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest.”
