From 1st January 2017, it’s compulsory for Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) to re-register their National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) at the age of 55.
Currently, SCs and PRs are required to register for their NRICs at age 15, and re-register at age 30 to update their photographs and identity information.
Introducing re-registration at age 55 will allow NRIC holders to update their NRICs with their most recent photographs. This will reduce difficulties in identification, particularly for the elderly. It will also lessen security risks resulting from incorrectly identifying a person based on an outdated photograph.
Those who are required to re-register for their NRICs will receive a notification letter from Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) a month before their 55th birthday, as per the ICA. They will have one year to complete the re-registration – from after they turn 55 years old up till before they turn 56. Those living abroad can re-register their NRIC within a year of their return to Singapore, ICA said.
ICA recommends that re-registration be done online via the ICA website.
