Indian Railways rolled out another 'pod concept' hotel at Mumbai’s CSMT station for long-distance passengers. This is the second such hotel at a city railway station in Mumbai.
Located near the waiting room on the main line of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station, there are a total of 40 pods, including 30 single pods, six double pods and four family pods. The pod at Mumbai CSMT has been developed by Central Railway as part of their non-fare revenue model, unlike the one that has been at Mumbai Central station that was opened by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
A pod or a capsule hotel, first developed in Japan, features a large number of small, bed-sized rooms known as capsules. These hotels provide affordable, basic, overnight accommodation for guests who do not require or cannot afford larger, more expensive rooms offered by conventional hotels.
The first pod facility in India opened on the first floor of the station building in Mumbai Central Railway Station in 2017. The facility had opened 48 pods in three categories — 30 classic, seven ladies only, 10 private and one for the differently-abled.
While the classic and ladies only pods comfortably fit one guest, the private pod also has a private space within the room, whereas the differently-abled pod will comfortably fit two guests with space for free movement of a wheelchair.
Each pod room facilitates free internet, TV, small locker, mirror, air conditioner, reading, mobile charging, smoke detectors and DND Indicators, among others.
The IRCTC said the tariffs may vary, depending on requirements, and that it will be around INR 999 per person for 12 hours, going up to INR 1,999 per person for 24 hours.
