Modi-Trump meeting may take place in May

There is a high possibility of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting US President Donald Trump in early May as both the governments are exploring plans for Modi’s trip to Washington.

Though the exact schedule is not out yet, sources point out that both the governments are keen on having earlier bilateral meeting. However, both the heads of the governments are expected to meet at the G-20 summit, to be organised at Hamburg in July.

Known for his flair in maintaining foreign relations, Modi was one of the earlier heads of the government to congratulate Trump on his elevation as US President. They also had a long conversation on the phone which touched upon issues of importance to both the countries-defence and security, economics, trade and other matters.

Meanwhile, ministers of both India and US have also had telephonic conversation. Manohar Parriker, Indian Defence Minister had talked to James Mattis, US Defence Secretary while Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had a conversation with Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of State recently.

A statement from Indian foreign ministry said that Swaraj and Tillerson “resolved to work together closely to further expand and deepen the multi-faceted strategic partnership between India and the US.”

“They emphasized that close and strong relations between India and the US were not only in mutual interest but also had regional and global significance. In this context, they agreed to intensify cooperation in various sectors, including defence and security, energy, and economy.”
