Sharpen your wits and flex your buzzer-fingers, Singapore quiz fans! It’s time for a new round of extreme quizzing as the count-down for Mind aMaze 2018 begins. The quiz, which is fast becoming an important quizzing fixture in Singapore will be held on Saturday, November 17 at Capital Tower 38th Floor, 168 Robinson Road, 068912 this year. The eighth iteration promises to be bigger, better, with fabulous prizes for participants and the audience and a winner’s trophy up for grabs.
India's leading sports media man, Joy Bhattacharjya will be back as the quiz master for the third time. Author of the ESPN Quiz book, part of some prolific franchises pertaining to sports like ESPN Star Sports, Kolkatta Knight Riders (KKR) from day one, FIFA Junior world cup and currently the CEO of professional volleyball league is also a keen quizzer and par excellence quizmaster.
Commenting on the constantly improving quizzing standards, says Joy Bhattacharjya, "I presented my first Mind aMaze in 2014, and it was an absolute revelation to see the standards of quizzing in Singapore. Since then, I have kept challenging the teams and they have proved more than equal to the task of answering almost anything thrown at them. Mind aMaze has graduated from being a one-of event to an eagerly awaited event on the Singapore mind games calendar. Mayukh would have been delighted."
Mind aMaze is an initiative conceived by the friends and family of passionate quizzer Mayukh Mitter, a Managing Director with GIC, who passed away suddenly on August 15, 2011.
“It’s our way to keep Mayukh’s memory and legacy alive while encouraging the spirit and thrill of quizzing in Singapore,” said Swapna Mitter, the event’s founder and Mayukh’s wife.
“It's absolutely heartening to see Mind aMaze go from strength to strength. From having eight teams participate in the inaugural year (2011) to over 30 teams competing last year, we sure have come a long way. While we have the regular ardent quizzers who keep coming year after year, we also see new enthusiastic faces every year. It is no doubt the premier quizzing event especially among expatriate Indians in Singapore,” she added.
One of the unique aspects of the ‘quiz contest with a difference’ is that it sets no age limits or eligibility criteria; it is open to everyone. All one needs is a love for quizzing and a cool nerve to participate. It pits corporate bigwigs against students, homemakers against entrepreneurs, veterans against newcomers, says the promo flyer.
“Our aim is to reach out to as many people as possible, and not just to the Indian community. We want children to get interested in quizzing and we are proud to say that Mind aMaze was the stepping stone for a few young brilliant minds who have now taken bigger strides in the world of quizzing and debating. We hope we are able to convey that this is a fun thing, that's it not just for the geeks,” Swapna said.
“We have managed to maintain a high standard of quizzing, thanks mainly to our celebrity quizmaster Joy Bhattacharjya, who is coming back this year too. We also make sure Mind aMaze is accessible to everyone. Participation remains free as long as the teams pre-register and there are attractive prizes and giveaways not just for the teams but also for members of the audience,” Swapna told Connected to India.
The quiz has received help and sponsorship from different sources over the years, including the Pan IIM Alumni Association (IIMPACT), which was a co-organiser for four years from 2014-2017 and other bodies.
“We have been extremely fortunate to receive the support of various individuals and organisations over the years, which has helped us grow. From organisations which have given us their venues for hosting this event to well-wishers who donate gifts and vouchers to friends who chip in with anything that's required – we are immensely grateful for the support and cooperation we continue to receive,” Swapna said.
