‘Lungi’ rocker Raghu Dixit set for another sensational Singapore show

It looks like fourth time's the charm for one of India's most prolific fusion music stars who is set to return to Singapore. Raghu Dixit, who turned the words lungi and rock into an associated pair, will be performing along with his band The Raghu Dixit Project on February 16 at the Capitol Theatre, 17 Stamford Road, in Singapore.

Believe it or not, Dixit worked as a scientist in a pharmaceuticals company in Belgium before switching careers to become a musician. He has a masters degree in microbiology from the University of Mysore.

"Our musical style is an amalgamation of influences from around the world and not just the ASEAN. And you will certainly see it on full display when we play in Singapore," he told Connected to India in an interview.

Dixit's music is an amalgamation of Indian ethnic music and styles from different parts of the world. He returns to Singapore at the behest of local event planners Teamwork Productions for the fourth time, having performed during the Kalaa Utsavam 2014 in The Raghu Dixit Project’s first international outing, at the ASEAN-India Music Festival 2017 and again last year during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre in 2018.

With over 1,500 concerts in more than 30 countries, the band is one of India's biggest Indie acts. Dixit’s unique brand of infectious, happy music transcends age, genre, and even language. His music is strongly rooted in Indian traditions and culture and is best known for presenting ancient Kannada poetry with a contemporary, global sound.

The Raghu Dixit Project is one of the most sought after bands in India at the moment and features prominently and quite regularly in some of the biggest music festivals around the world. From their colourful lungis, a take on their cultural heritage, to their rooted and earthy sound, they have become a stellar example of modern India.
