Kangana’s character in Rangoon lands the film in legal soup

Kangana Ranaut-Saif Ali Khan-Shahid Kapoor starrer Rangoon has landed in the legal soup just before the scheduled release date of February 24, 2017. However, director of the film – Vishal Bhardwaj has defended the allegations that the films swashbuckling 1940s movie star character of Kangana Ranaut is a copyright violation of ‘Fearless Nadia’ – a stunt actor from 30s and 40s eras.

Reportedly, the production house- Wadia Movietone Pvt. Ltd has claimed that Kangana Ranaut’s character – Miss Julia is based on real-life Australian stunt actor Mary Evans, popularly known as Fearless Nadia. The production house states that it holds the rights to all scripts, publicity material, and posters for the Fearless Nadia films it had produced. As per the Wadias’ suit alleges that the Rangoon makers have copied Fearless Nadia’s characters, costumes, persona, and even the signature phrase.

While slamming the suit and calling it baseless – Vishal Bhardwaj’s counsel Ravi Kadam has stated that there is no copyright on historical characters and in that era, there were a large number of stunt women who performed their own stunts. He also has said that Fearless Nadia was an actress and not a character.
