GT suffered their first defeat of the season after losing to Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK. With a target of 207, the visitors failed to chase it down as they were restricted to 143/8 in 20 overs by the CSK bowling attack.

In a statement released by Indian Premier League (IPL) on its website, Gill was found guilty of breaching IPL’s Code of Conduct after his team maintained a slow over-rate and was fined the aforementioned amount.

“Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on March 26,” an official statement from the organiser read.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Gill was fined ₹12 lakh,” the statement added.

Shubman Gill took over the captaincy reins of Gujarat Titans after Hardik Pandya left the team to return to his old franchise Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024. Gill kicked off his IPL captaincy stint with a win over Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad. Gujarat Titans defeated Hardik Pandya-led side by six runs.

‘We were always playing catch-up’: Shubman Gill after GT lose to CSK

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill didn’t shy away from admitting that his team was completely outclassed across departments by Ruturaj Gaikwad’s CSK, adding that the batting unit let it down in the 206-run chase.

“They outplayed us when we were batting, their execution was spot on. We backed ourselves to get a decent score in the powerplay and once we didn’t, we were always playing catch-up. It was unfortunate for us,” Gill said at the post-match presentation.

“In T20 you can always talk about 10-15 runs here or there, end of the day it’s about how much they got. We always expected to chase 190-200, it was a really good wicket. Felt like we let ourselves down while batting,” he added.

Gujarat Titans will play their next match against SunRisers Hyderabad on Sunday, March 31, in Hyderabad.
