42-year-old Shama has vowed to use her new job to represent her faith. She was overwhelmed with taking over the position.

With the recent executive orders of the US President Donald Trump including a travel ban from seven Muslim-dominated countries, she hopes her new position will lead to a better life for the country for immigrants.

A passion since her earliest days in law, Mesiwala will handle juvenile dependency cases.

She is a law professor, senior judicial attorney for California’s 3rd District Court of Appeal and co-founder of the South Asian Bar Association of Sacramento.
