PBD is celebrated on January 9 every year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India. January 9, 1915 was the day that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa and eventually led India’s freedom struggle.

Conventions were held every year since 2003 until 2015, when the event was organised in India once every two years, with a different foreign consulate marking the date in the years it is not held in India.

The 15th PBD Convention was held from January 21-23, 2019 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh with the theme ‘Role of Indian Diaspora in building New India’.

Following a massive two-day convention in Singapore in 2018, the Indian consulate in Sao Paulo was chosen as the host for PBD 2020 with a cultural day planned on the occasion.

These conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government for mutually beneficial activities and networking opportunities to the Indian community residing in various parts of the world to share their experiences in various fields.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) is conferred on overseas Indians by the President of India as a part of the PBD conventions.
