American style icon and celebrated designer Iris Apfel, who sported an oversized black glass and taught her followers how to define their fashion statements, died in her home in Palm Beach, media reports said.
She was 102.
Known for her unique fashion taste that redefined the industry, Apfel was seen sporting bright lipstick and chunky beads.
The fashion icon’s official Instagram page also verified her demise.
She reached the peak of her success in 1980 and 90s.
She served celebrities like Greta Garbo and Estée Lauder.
Her agent Lori Sale told The Guardian: “She was a visionary in every sense of the word. She saw the world through a unique lens – one adorned with giant, distinctive spectacles that sat atop her nose. Through those lenses, she saw the world as a kaleidoscope of colour, a canvas of patterns and prints.”
US designer Tommy Hilfiger pays tribute
US designer Tommy Hilfiger paid tribute to the designer and called her an ‘influencer’.
“Iris Apfel has become a world-famous fashion icon because of her incredible talent not only as an artist, but as an influencer,” he was quoted as saying by BBC.
“She has had an amazing effect on so many people with her huge heart and magic touch with everyone she meets,” he said.
Born in New York in 1921, Apfel was featured in a 2014 documentary, Iris, directes by Albert Maysles.
She was the only child of Jewish parents Samuel and Sadye Barrel.
