World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar John Cena, who entertained generations of fans and made iconic phrases like “You can’t see me” a global catchphrase, retired on Saturday.

Cena’s retirement marks the end of a historic era in sports entertainment. Over a remarkable 24-year career, he clinched a record 17 world titles, cementing his legacy as one of WWE’s greatest superstars.

In his final match, Cena was defeated by Austria’s Gunther, bringing an emotional close to his legendary in-ring journey. In a moment that left fans heartbroken, Cena tapped out and placed his boots at the centre of the ring — a symbolic tradition followed by wrestlers bidding farewell to the squared circle.

Describing his legacy, WWE’s official website said: “He’s a 17-time World Champion, New York Times best-selling author and record-setting Make-A-Wish granter. He’s released a hit album, starred in blockbuster movies and carried the torch for WWE since he first set foot in a WWE ring nearly two decades ago.”

Beyond wrestling, Cena successfully transitioned into acting in 2006 and earned praise for both comedy and action roles.

His notable performances include Trainwreck (2015), Blockers (2018), and The Suicide Squad (2021).

He also starred in The Marine (2006), Bumblebee (2018), F9 (2021), and portrayed the title character in the superhero series Peacemaker (2022–2025).
