The incident took place on Sunday night (local time), June 15, at Centennial Park, near several carnival rides, causing panic among families and children attending the event.

According to the West Valley City Police Department, the victims who died include a 41-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man, and the infant. Two teenagers sustained gunshot wounds, while a pregnant woman was injured while trying to jump a fence to escape the gunfire.

A 16-year-old male has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Police have confirmed that no other suspects are being sought at this time.

The shooting occurred around 9:20 p.m. local time. Officers who were patrolling the area noticed a verbal argument between two groups. As they approached to intervene, the teenage suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire. One officer discharged a weapon but did not hit the suspect. The 16-year-old was quickly taken into custody without further incident.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and fear, as people ran for safety. Many attendees shared their experiences on social media, along with images and videos of the large police presence at the venue. Detectives continued interviews with witnesses late into the night, and authorities appealed to anyone who left the area during the chaos to come forward with information.

The motive for the shooting has not yet been determined. The suspect had not been interviewed as of Sunday night, and police said they could not confirm if gang-related activity was involved. The investigation remains ongoing.

WestFest is an annual celebration that highlights the cultural diversity of West Valley City. The shooting has shocked local residents who had gathered for what is normally a festive occasion filled with music, food, and entertainment.
