US President Trump chooses personal resort to host 2026 G20 meeting

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States will host the 2026 G20 summit at Trump National Doral, his golf resort near Miami. The announcement was made by Trump during an event at the Oval Office on Friday, September 5.

The decision comes after he chose not to attend this year’s G20 meeting, which is taking place in South Africa. “I think Doral will be the best location,” Trump told reporters, as quoted by Reuters, while revealing the plan.

The G20 summit, focused on global economic policy, brings together 19 countries, the European Union, and the African Union. A final date for the 2026 event is yet to be fixed.

By selecting a venue he owns for an international summit funded by US taxpayers, Trump is likely to face fresh questions over conflict of interest.

His Doral property is expected to benefit from large amounts of hotel and restaurant business during the summit. A White House official said that services provided to attendees would be billed by Doral at-cost, and the administration has dismissed any claims of improper financial benefit. Officials have also stated that Trump’s business assets are currently under third-party management.

During the Oval Office announcement, Trump also said that Vice President JD Vance will represent the United States at this year’s G20 summit in South Africa. The president had earlier hinted in July that he may skip the meeting due to differences with South Africa over its land policy and stance on Israel.

This is not the first time Trump has tried to use the Doral property for an international event. In his previous term, he had proposed hosting the 2020 Group of Seven summit at the same location but later dropped the plan following objections from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.

Ethics experts at the time argued that such a move might violate the US Constitution, which restricts the president from profiting from office.

Since returning to office in January, Trump has regularly hosted both global leaders and corporate figures at his various properties, including Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach and golf clubs in New Jersey, Washington, and Scotland.

His real estate and branding business has expanded into ventures such as crypto tokens, meme coins, and merchandise like Trump-branded bibles, watches, and sneakers. These ventures have added hundreds of millions of dollars to Trump’s declared paper wealth.

The Trump National Doral property includes a range of facilities such as a large clubhouse, spa, restaurants, swimming pool, and around 100,000 square feet of event space. The main venue, according to the official website, is named the Donald J. Trump Grand Ballroom.

In January, even before Trump assumed office again, the US State Department had invited American cities to submit proposals to host the G20 summit. The meetings were initially expected to be held in early or mid-October 2026. It is not yet known whether Doral or Miami had officially submitted bids as part of that process.
