Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has been appointed as the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) new co-deputy director, sharing the role with the agency’s current second-in-command, Dan Bongino.

Bailey expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi for the chance to serve in this important position.
“I am proud to announce I have accepted the role of Co-Deputy Director of the FBI. I extend my thanks to @POTUS and @AGPamBondi for the opportunity to serve in the mission to Make America Safe Again. I will protect America and uphold the Constitution,” Bailey wrote on X.
To Missouri, thank you.

My tenure as Attorney General has been the honor of my professional career, but what has made it truly meaningful has been the opportunity to serve my home state.
Together, we have defended the rule of law and safeguarded our freedoms. I am forever…
Bailey will resign as Missouri’s Attorney General effective September 8. He thanked the people of Missouri for trusting him to represent the state and described serving as the 44th Attorney General as a humbling privilege.
“My life has been defined by a call to service, and I am once again answering that call, this time at the national level. But wherever I am called, Missouri is and always will be home,” he added.
Bailey has been Missouri’s Attorney General since 2023 and is known for his active role in supporting his state’s policies on abortion and gender-affirming care for minors.
He also filed a lawsuit against Starbucks over its diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. Earlier, he had asked the Supreme Court to intervene in a criminal case against former US President Donald Trump, but the court declined.
Dan Bongino, who will continue as the FBI’s co-deputy director alongside Bailey, is a known Trump loyalist. In July, Bongino reportedly clashed with officials over the FBI and Justice Department’s review of the Jeffrey Epstein case. Sources said he briefly stopped coming to work and considered resigning, according to CBS News.
Bailey’s appointment comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership within the FBI under the current administration.
