Sawitri Theatre Group is set to present the Canadian premier of Hindi Shorts 2019 – nine short plays written by Tanuj Khosla in Hindi at Sampradaya Theatre, Mississauga from March 14 to 16, 2019.

Ranging from light-hearted comedy to dark vengeance – “Aulaad” (Children), “Coolie” (Porter), “Home Delivery”, “Humaare Beech” (Amongst Us), “Mili”, “Project Admission”, “The Sacrifice”, The Date” and “Third Wheel”, the plays encompass a range of human emotions and conditions.

“The most fulfilling aspect for any playwright is to his/her work come to life. To have nine of my plays being performed back to back on one show – it is a feeling that I can't describe in words. I am just overwhelmed with gratitude towards God and then towards Sawitri Theatre Group,” said Tanuj.

The creative team of Hindi Shorts 2019 consists of Shruti Shah, the lead Director along with Nitin Sawant. Raina Desai and Gunja Chakraborty are emerging directors, each directing two plays and assisting with the rest. Lighting Design is by Sid Sawant and set design by Raina Desai and Shruti Shah; sound by Keyoor Shah and Costume Design by Shruti Shah and Raina Desai. The production consists of 14 actors, some of whom take on multiple roles.

“Tanuj’s stories are rooted in basic human emotions raw and passionate – love, loathing, envy, anger, and all come with a surprise ending,” said Shruti Shah.

Tanuj, a poet since childhood, started writing lyrics a few years ago and two of his songs made it to the semi-finals of the 2014 and 2015 UK Songwriting Contest in the 'Lyrics-only' category. In recent years, he has branched out into writing poetry, plays and short stories, expanding his creative range as he goes along.

“I feel extremely elated and humbled to see that my stories are liked and appreciated by audiences on the other side of the globe,” he said. “Toronto has an extremely vibrant and multifaceted Hindi-speaking community most of whom love and support arts and theatre.”

Founded in January 2003, Sawitri Theatre Group is an award-winning, incorporated not-for-profit organisation under the artistic leadership of Jasmine Sawant and Shruti Shah, presenting original, works featuring established professionals as well as emerging artists.
