Student art works to welcome The World’s 50 Best Restaurants to Singapore

With Singapore being the host city of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019, Orchard Road will be adorned with art pieces by students from pioneer arts institution, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).

This partnership initiative by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and NAFA will see 70 culinary-themed art pieces on display on glass shards along Orchard to Somerset. The exhibition will run from now till June 27.

The pieces were conceptualised and produced by over 50 second-year NAFA Fine Art students, STB said in a press statement.

This is also the first time The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 will be held in Asia.

To inspire the students to create their art, STB organised visits for them to restaurants in Singapore which were on both The Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants and The World’s 50 Best Restaurants lists.

They include Corner House at the Botanic Gardens, Odette at the National Gallery and Jaan at Swissotel the Stamford. At these visits, students interacted with chefs, observed them at work and spoke to them about their culinary journeys.

“These striking art pieces by NAFA’s young talents will add to the spirited atmosphere of Orchard Road as we celebrate The World’s 50 Best Restaurants being in Singapore,” said Ms Ranita Sundramoorthy, Director of Retail and Dining, STB.

“Through this initiative, we hope for audiences to experience art in the city through the stories and imaginations of our emerging artists, shedding light on Singapore’s rich and diverse cultures through art, food, and gastronomy”, added Ms Sabrina Koh, Vice-Dean of NAFA’s Fine Art Programme, School of Art and Design.
