Singapore’s 1880 club shuts abruptly, enters liquidation

Until just a day ago, Singapore’s private members’ club 1880 was still actively promoting its upcoming events on social media. Members had access to its usual offerings, and nothing suggested that the club was about to shut down. But on Tuesday, June 17, the club announced its abrupt and permanent closure, revealing that it would enter liquidation.

Located in the Robertson Quay area, 1880 was launched in late 2017 by founder Marc Nicholson. Known for its exclusive atmosphere, the club offered a mix of social events, a restaurant, bar, spa, and co-working spaces. It also gained a reputation for hosting prominent speakers, including well-known diplomats and personalities from across the region.

The sudden closure came just weeks after the club’s Hong Kong branch shut down on May 30, less than a year after it opened. In an email sent out following the announcement, members were informed that 1880’s holding company, 38 Degrees, and its operating company had been placed under provisional liquidation. Details regarding the liquidation process and a meeting with creditors are expected to follow.

Interestingly, Connected to India shot an exclusive interview of cricket icon Steve Waugh at 1880 just last week. Himanshu Verma, CEO and Founder of Connected to India, who was in conversation with the legend, expressed his shock at the recent development.

“It’s sad to see 1880 down its shutters. It’s also ironic… so many high-profile deals were made at that place, people made so much money, yet 1880 has now entered liquidation,” Himanshu said.

When CtoI reached out to the club early on Tuesday, it was met with this response: “We are reaching out to inform you that, as of today, 1880 has officially closed its doors and entered into liquidation. We deeply regret to share this news, and we understand the impact it has on our members and community.

“While this is a challenging moment, we do remain hopeful that there may be a potential buyer interested in taking on both the team and the space. However, this possibility is not confirmed at this time, and we will keep you updated should the situation evolve.”

This sudden move also took employees by surprise. One staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity, told CNA that the closure came despite earlier reassurances of a potential takeover or new buyer.

While staff were aware of the club’s financial struggles, they said top leadership had remained largely silent in recent weeks. According to the same employee, salaries had been paid without issue, but there were rumours that the club had been struggling to pay suppliers.

Founding member Steve Okun, who is also the CEO of APAC Advisors, told the outlet said the atmosphere at the club had seemed completely normal just the day before the closure was announced. Many employees and members were caught off guard by the sudden news.

Since its inception, 1880 Singapore had cultivated a distinct presence in the city’s social scene, bringing together business leaders, creatives, and changemakers under one roof. Its closure marks the end of a unique chapter in the country’s lifestyle and networking space.
