Singapore partners with Rolls-Royce to develop AI for Air Force engine maintenance

The first collaborative digital technology project between Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and Rolls-Royce will be focused on leveraging visual analytics for engine maintenance. 

Artificial intelligence (AI) will be deployed to analyse images and videos captured by a tool-mounted camera that inspects engine parts.

“There is much value and potential in tapping AI to enhance the efficiency of the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s overall engine maintenance processes,” said Ang Jer Meng, Director Air Systems, DSTA. “We will continue to team up with global partners such as Rolls-Royce, as we unlock innovative technological solutions for Singapore’s defence.”

Automating this process with AI could increase efficiency and performance, DSTA and Rollys-Royce said in a press statement.  

In July 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between DSTA and Rolls-Royce at the Farnborough Air Show in the United Kingdom. The MoU was aimed at strengthening collaborations between the two parties on digital service solutions.  

“This collaboration with Singapore will propel us forward in achieving our vision of becoming the world’s leading industrial technology company, by helping us overcome the challenges that come with developing and deploying new technologies,” added Louise Donaghey, Rolls-Royce Senior Vice President for India and South Asia.
