MTV Unplugged, a music concert format where musicians perform different arrangements of their biggest hits, was born in 1989. Lost its sheen over the years and is now making its powerful comeback.
Three of India’s most dominant voices - Rekha Bharadwaj, Harshdeep Kaur and Rasika Shekar - are all set to fire-up a musical evening in Singapore’s first ever MTV Unplugged on November 3rd at the Esplanade Concert Hall.
Sounds of Sufi, the name for the Singapore MTV Unplugged is where true fans of music will be headed that evening.
In the early 1990s, top music artists who appeared on the show released their ‘Unplugged’ session as an album, garnering critical and commercial acclaim for them. Eric Clapton's ‘Unplugged’ (1992) sold a whopping 26 million copies worldwide and remains the best-selling live album of all time.
Coming together for the first time in Singapore, the three singers promise to give a soulful experience of beautiful songs which will include their famous hits from Bollywood and folk music.
A renowned Indian playback singer who is known for her distinctive style, Rekha Bharadwaj has sung over 70 superhit Hindi movie songs including ‘Judaai’ (Badlapur), ‘Mileya Mileya’ (Happy Ending), famous ‘Kabira’ and ‘Ghaghra’ (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani), ‘Phir le aaya dil’ (Barfi), and many more.
She has won a national award for the song ‘Badi Dheere Jali’ (Ishqiya). She has also won the Global Indian Music Awards (GIMA) as ‘Best Duet for the song Kabira’ with Tochi Raina and ‘Darling’ in 2012. She won the IIFA award for the best female singer ‘Sasural Genda Phool’, Filmfare for ‘Masakali’ and many more.
Rekha Bhardwaj is known for her soulful voice and leaves the audiences awestruck by her performance. She has performed in more than 500 concerts all over the globe.
An Indian playback singer, Harshdeep Kaur has worked with some leading music directors like AR Rahman, Pritam, Vishal-Shekhar, Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Amit Trivedi. Some of her popular hits are ‘Katiya Karun’ (Rockstar), ‘Heer’ (Jab Tak Hai Jaan), Ik Onkar (Rang De Basanti), ‘Zaalima’ (Raees), ‘Nachde Ne Saare’ (Baar Baar Dekho), ‘Bari Barsi’ (Band Baaja Baaraat), ‘Kabira’ (Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani) and ‘Balley Balley’ (Bin Roye), a Pakistani film.
She has performed in Coke Studio (India) in all the three seasons headlined the prestigious Southbank Centre Music Festival in London, alongside Soul/Bollywood singer Ash King. She is the winner of MTV Video GaGa Contest200 and featured on MTV Ray Ban Never Hide Sounds as a Mentor for young and upcoming bands in the Sufi Genre. She mentored the Sufi-Rock Band 'Nasya' in the first season and the band ‘Jihaana’ in Season 2.
One of the most popular singer-flautists in the entertainment Industry, Rasika Shekar has been performing since the age of 14, ranging from ghazals, semi-classical, Bollywood and others. She performs Indian classical vocals and the Indian bamboo flute, blending Indian music with a jazz repertoire.
She has performed with one of the biggest guitar legends of all time, John McLaughlin, as a part of Berklee’s finale concert in Spain to thousands of people. Rasika has performed as a special guest of honour at the Istikhbar Festival in Tunisia and a solo act at the World Music concert at the Fundacion Bancaja in Valencia, Spain. She was the special featured artist in “Roots and Origins of India to Valencia” bringing together Indian music, flamenco and western classical music. She has performed numerous live shows with the legendary trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and also been a part of the World Flute Festival in India.
