Supertech's Apex and Ceyane towers in Noida, Uttar Pradesh were razed in pursuance of a Supreme Court order that found their construction within the Emerald Court society premises in violation of norms.
The Apex and Ceyane buildings had 915 flats, 21 shops and two basements, and were taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar. The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway that was shut down for traffic today resumed just 15 minutes after the demolition. Around 5,000 residents of the nearby societies — ATS Greens Village and Emerald Court — had evacuated their flats for the demolition.
Edifice Engineering, which undertook the demolition with its South African partner Jet Demolitions, had assured neighbours that there would be no damage to their buildings.
Road diversions were put in place early in the morning, as the evacuation of all residents from the two adjoining housing societies of Emerald Court and ATS Village in Sector 93A was completed around 8 am. Over 3,700 kg of explosives was loaded into the twin towers and an area of roughly 500 square metres around them has been converted into an exclusion zone, where no human, vehicle or animal was allowed.
Close to 500 police and traffic personnel were deployed around the demolition site and the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. A no-fly zone was imposed over Noida for drones. Air space within a radius of one nautical mile above the blast was made unavailable for flights during the period of the demolition. Mumbai-based Edifice Engineering has partnered with South Africa’s Jet, carried out the blast.
