Netflix down for 11,000 users in the US; company denies outage report

Netflix, the hugely popular streaming service, was down yesterday night for around 11,000 viewers in the United States, as per the outage tracking website Downdetector.com. This was a very small fraction of the 74.3 million paid subscribers in the US and Canada that Netflix has (as of the third quarter of 2022), but the number was still quite significant for the US audience of Netflix, especially as the outage came just when people normally settle down for some night-time TV watching.

Some media reports said that users in the United Kingdom and India were affected, too, though most of the outage reports came from the US.

Netflix reacted to the outage report saying: “Is Netflix down? Netflix is up! We are not currently experiencing an interruption to our streaming service.”

The streaming service has recently been in the news for a controversy surrounding The Big Bang Theory, one of the top American shows, because of remarks by the show’s characters on Indian movie icons Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai.
