Indian-origin man charged with brutal killing of 71-year-old US sex offender

A chilling case from California has shocked both Indian and international communities after a 29-year-old Indian-origin man, Varun Suresh, was charged with the brutal murder of a convicted child sex offender. As per reports, the incident took place in Fremont, where 71-year-old registered offender David Brimmer was stabbed to death in what police described as a targeted attack.

Court documents revealed that Suresh had confessed to planning the killing for some time. He allegedly used California’s Megan’s Law database, which makes information about registered sex offenders publicly available, to identify his victim.

Investigators later found screenshots of multiple profiles of offenders on his phone, including Brimmer’s, with the latter taken less than an hour before the crime.

According to police, Suresh disguised himself as a certified public accountant seeking clients, carrying props such as a bag, notebook and coffee cup to appear convincing. After confirming Brimmer’s identity at his home, he shook hands with him before launching the attack.

Brimmer attempted to escape, running into a neighbour’s garage and kitchen to seek help, but Suresh pursued him and fatally stabbed him in the neck before slitting his throat. Emergency responders arrived but could not save the victim.

Reports mentioned that investigators said Suresh admitted that he specifically chose Brimmer due to his age and vulnerability. They reported that he expressed no remorse during questioning and described the act as satisfying. Police added that Suresh had made no attempt to escape and was arrested at the scene, with the murder weapon recovered from him.

Prosecutors have charged Suresh with murder, burglary and use of a deadly weapon. Authorities have termed the killing an isolated incident and said there was no continuing threat to the public. He remains in custody as the case moves forward.

Meanwhile, this is not Suresh’s first brush with the law. In 2021, he was arrested for making a fake bomb threat and burglary after leaving a suspicious bag at a hotel in Fremont. At that time, investigators said he had claimed he was targeting the hotel’s CEO, whom he accused of being a pedophile.
