IHC CultureFest 2020's Ramayana in the Limelight a unique coming together of Indian dance forms and martial arts

The Indian Heritage Centre's first ever digital edition of CultureFest 2020 kicked off on September 5 and promises audiences an eclectic line-up of programmes revolving around the diversity, culture and heritage of Indian Arts as seen through the lens of the epic literary work - The Ramayana.  

Amongst its schedule of events, are daily cultural showcases. The first of these, titled 'Ramayana in the Limelight' and presented by Wolfpact Media, showcases six key characters in the Ramayana through a unique blend of various Indian dance forms and martial arts.

A local yoga practitioner from Singapore Anil Sheokand presents a controlled showcase of Rama through Yoga and various yogic poses. 

Aarti Devarajan depicts Sita through Bharatanatyam, a traditional Indian dance form in which she is trained. 

Kalaripayattu a martial art from Kerala is used effectively by Reuben Elangovan to portray Lakshmana. 

Pallavi Sharma, a trained Kathak dancer, portrays Ravana’s sister Surpanakha, using facial expressions, hand movements and footwork. 

Hanuman, the divine monkey and ardent devotee of Rama, is showcased agilely through the martial art form Silambam by local practitioner Vedagiri. 

Maathavan Kalaichelvan portrays the ten-headed Ravana through the Veena or Veenai as it is called in Tamil. Ravana was said to be passionate and extremely talented at playing the Veena.
