‘Grounds’ for divorce: Greek woman ends marriage after ChatGPT reads coffee cup, reveals husband’s infidelity

In a bizarre turn of events, one that saw a mix of age-old tradition and artificial intelligence, a Greek woman has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband of 12 years, after claiming that ChatGPT revealed her husband was having an affair — through a digital interpretation of Greek coffee grounds.

The woman, a mother to two, turned to generative AI tool in an unconventional attempt at tasseography — the traditional art of reading coffee grounds to predict the future. She uploaded a photo of her husband’s coffee cup and asked ChatGPT to ‘read’ it.

What followed was an unexpected twist. According to her, ChatGPT claimed the grounds showed signs of infidelity — suggesting her husband was romantically involved with a younger woman whose name began with the letter “E”.

It also allegedly warned that this ‘other’ woman was determined to destroy their family.

Taking the AI’s mystical ‘reading’ seriously, the woman reportedly asked her husband to leave the house and informed their children of the impending divorce. Within days, she initiated formal legal proceedings.

Appearing on the popular Greek morning show To Proino, the husband shared his shock over the events. He said that his now estranged wife has always been into trendy ideas.

The man said the woman had an idea of having ChatGPT read the coffee grounds one fine day and proceeded to take pictures and approached ChatGPT.

While the man dismissed the AI’s interpretation as “nonsense”, the fallout was swift. He said she told him to leave, and then he got a call from a lawyer. That’s when he realised that she was serious.

According to the man, this is not the first time his wife has turned to supernatural guidance. A few years ago, she became convinced of predictions made by an astrologer, the man said, adding that it took almost a year for her to move on from that.

The man’s legal counsel emphasised that claims generated by artificial intelligence carry no legal weight and said their client is innocent until proven otherwise.

Experts in traditional Greek coffee reading have also weighed in on the incident, pointing out that proper tasseography requires more than just a glance at coffee grounds.
