Google begins India rollout of AI-powered Search feature

Google has started rolling out its new ‘AI Mode’ in Search for users in India, beginning with English. The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Tuesday, July 8, following what he described as a strong response during the experimental phase.

In a post on X, Pichai said, “After an incredible response in Labs, we’re starting to roll out AI Mode in Search to everyone in India (English to start). It’s a total reimagining of Search, and we’re excited for even more people to use it.”

AI Mode was first introduced in India in June this year as part of Google’s Search Labs, where it was made available for early testing.

According to Google, users responded positively, with many appreciating the feature’s speed and the quality of answers. People used it for various purposes, including learning deeply about topics and understanding complex instructions.

The company has now decided to make the feature available to all users in India without the need to sign up for Labs. Over the next few days, users will start seeing a new tab for AI Mode in their Google Search results as well as in the Search bar of the Google app.

The experience includes all the features from the Labs version. Users will be able to type queries, speak into the app, or use Google Lens to snap a photo. The AI will then provide detailed answers, include useful links, and allow follow-up questions to go deeper into the topic.

Google said the aim of the new AI Mode is to make it easier for people to explore their questions, find helpful information, and understand topics more deeply using AI technology.
