Enhancing performance of athletes through sports analytics: GIIS

Global Indian International School (GIIS) has deployed sports analytics in soccer and basketball to tailor the learning and development of individual student athletes.

Its first deployment in Singapore schools, the Sports Performance Enhancing Data Analytics System (SPEDAS) is currently available at the GIIS SMART Campus located in Punggol. This technology is similar to that used by the National Basketball Association (NBA) to improve player performance and game strategy based on real-time data analytics. SPEDAS tracks statistics such as number of passes, strike rate and ball possession as the action is ongoing, in addition to recording the bio-data of players, such as the heart-rate.

Being one of the first  in the world to implement the technology at the school level, GIIS plans to incorporate SPEDAS in other sports in its other campuses around the world.

“GIIS strongly believes in providing a well-designed learning experience for each student and SPEDAS allows us to offer an NBA level coaching system for students to realise their potential,” said Atul Temurnikar, Co-Founder & Chairman of GIIS.

Bringing the media on a short tour of the GIIS SMART Campus facilities, Termunikar demonstrated how the exciting action on the field can be displayed on an iPad in real-time. Numbered dots glide around on screen as the team takes formation, with the players' names and heart-rates recorded along the margins of the screen.

Temurnikar explained that SPEDAS allowed coaches to course-correct students through the use of real-time data and predictive analytics. “It complements other data-analytics models that are being used at GIIS to measure and improve students’ academic performance,” he added.

7S Analysis is another data analytics software implemented at GIIS, which allows teachers to identify a student's individual strengths and weaknesses. They will then be able to provide timely support to enhance a student's performance.

“No two students are alike, and we want to provide each student the platform to be the best they can be in their chosen field and area of interest,” Temurnikar stressed.

The GIIS SMART Campus has various facilities and offerings that allow it to provide tailored learning for students. These include 92 digitally connected SMART classrooms, more than 42 skills-based studios, eight SMART science, composite and design technology labs, as well as unique concepts like Student Innovation Rooms, Flipped Classrooms and Learning Commons for collaborative learning.
