A second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly dragged and raped inside the premises of a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, more than a year after the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case shocked the country, media reports said on Saturday.

Sources told India Today the student stepped out of the campus on Friday at 8.30 pm with a male friend. Near the campus gate, a man allegedly dragged her to a secluded area behind the hospital and raped her.

The survivor was later admitted to a hospital for treatment, and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The victim’s father told India Today that he learnt about the attack from his daughter’s friend. “When I reached there, my daughter was in a serious condition, and there was no response from the hospital administration,” he said.

He further alleged that his daughter had gone outside the campus to eat phuchka (golgappas) after being called there by a friend.

“When she reached the campus gate, around four to five persons were there. One of them raped her, took her mobile phone, and demanded INR 3,000 to return it. Later, the boy who had gone with her brought her back,” he told India Today.

The latest incident has drawn parallels with the 2024 RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case in Kolkata, where a young doctor was raped and murdered, sparking widespread outrage across West Bengal.
