More flight options for travellers as SIA, Vietnam Airlines ink codeshare

Travellers between Singapore and Vietnam will soon have more flight options, with Vietnam Airlines and Singapore Airlines set to launch a new codeshare arrangement from October 26. The agreement allows both carriers to sell seats on each other’s flights on selected routes, giving travellers greater flexibility and connectivity.

According to reports, in a bid to create a dominant full-service airline in the domestic and international markets, SIA had announced the plan to merge Vistara and Tata-owned Air India in November 2022.

Under the deal, Singapore Airlines will codeshare on Vietnam Airlines-operated flights between Singapore and Hanoi as well as Ho Chi Minh City. In return, Vietnam Airlines will codeshare on Singapore Airlines-operated services between Singapore and Da Nang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The tickets for these flights will be progressively made available from October 10 through the airlines’ own channels and travel agents, subject to regulatory approvals, an official news release stated.

The move strengthens the partnership between the two carriers, who have agreed to explore adding more destinations in future. They are also looking at expanding commercial cooperation to enhance passenger experience with more choices and better connectivity.

Nguyen Quang Trung, Director of Corporate Planning and Development at Vietnam Airlines, described the agreement as “a significant milestone in the ongoing strategic partnership between Vietnam Airlines and Singapore Airlines — one of the world’s most prestigious 5-star carriers”. He said the collaboration would strengthen the airline’s international presence and improve travel options for customers.

Dai Haoyu, Senior Vice President Marketing Planning at Singapore Airlines, said the partnership would play an important role in boosting connectivity. “By leveraging our respective networks, we can offer customers more choice, greater flexibility, and seamless transfers across our services between the two countries,” he said. He added that the tie-up would also support economic growth and tourism, while furthering ties between Singapore and Vietnam.
