Actor Varun Tewari, who has made his feature film debut in Anurag Basu’s Metro… In Dino, earlier this year, calls the experience “surreal” and a “milestone” in his life. In the film, Varun plays Amey, a single father, sharing screen space with Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
“I loved working with these two people. I got to work with Aditya (Roy Kapur) also for a bit… my first feature set, a lot of learning, a lot of fun,” he says during an exclusive interview with Connected to India.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Basu, Metro… In Dino is a spiritual follow-up to the 2007 film Life… In A Metro. Varun recalled how the opportunity came his way: “I was in Europe for a holiday. And I get a call from Kavish Sinha, a leading casting director… They said, we’re doing this film called Metro In Dino. Do you want to audition for it? I said, hell yeah, man. It’s Anurag Basu.”
After sending his audition from Europe, he heard nothing for months until one day he was told, “So you’ve been locked. And we’ll see you on set.”
Before stepping into acting, Varun was in the Merchant Navy for six years. “My brother was already in the Merchant Navy. He said, buddy, I’m roaming around, I’m globetrotting. Money is good at a very, very young age. So just join me. And I said, why not? And then it was 6 years of sailing. 2016 is when I called it quits…” he says.
Since then, he has worked in series like Inside Edge 3, Little Things 3, and others, along with voice acting in And Now Life. “I’ve wanted to be an actor since day one,” Varun says, adding that he continues to train through workshops while learning the most on set.
