
Southern superstar Rajinikanth’s latest release Coolie has set a new benchmark for Tamil movies by earning around INR 150 crore worldwide, early trade reports suggest.
According to trade website Sacnilk, Coolie has scored an estimated INR 75–80+ crore gross on its first day in India. Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo is currently the record Tamil opener domestically with around INR 76 crore gross. At the overseas box office, early estimates suggest INR 75+ crore opening for Coolie, making it a INR 150+ crore worldwide debut, which is a record for Tamil cinema.
The trade website mentioned Coolie dominated with an estimated INR 28–30 crore gross in Tamil Nadu, which is one of the biggest starts in the state.
The final figure has not been revealed so far.
The movie is expected to set the box office on fire over the Independence Day weekend.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures, the movie hit the silverscreen on August 14, on the eve of Independence Day.
Rajinikanth plays the character of a ‘coolie’ in the movie.
The film stars Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Rachita Ram, Kanna Ravi and others, with Aamir Khan.
