This year’s UNGA holds special significance as the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary. The theme for the session is “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”

A high-level commemorative meeting is slated for 22 September to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN’s founding. The main segment of the high-level general debate will commence on 23 September, with the traditional opening address by the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He will be followed by United States President Donald Trump.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are not expected to attend the session. However, several other prominent world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are listed among the speakers.

During the morning session of 26 September, which begins at 9:00 a.m. local time in New York (6:30 p.m. IST), Prime Minister Modi is expected to speak after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Prime Ministers Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, K.P. Sharma Oli of Nepal, and Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan are scheduled to speak later during the same session.

The final speaker listed for the morning session is identified as the “Prime Minister” of Bangladesh, which is expected to be Muhammad Yunus. He is currently referred to as the Chief Advisor to the caretaker government that was formed following the removal of the democratically elected government led by Sheikh Hasina.

This will mark Prime Minister Modi’s seventh address at the UNGA high-level session, reaffirming India’s engagement at the global multilateral platform at a time of significant international developments and global challenges.
