At least 25 gunshots were fired at comedian-actor Kapil Sharma’s café in Canada’s Surrey for the second time in a month, a purported video of the attack that surfaced on social media showed.
Amid the gunshots, a voice was heard saying in the video, “… We had called the target, but he didn’t hear the ring, so we had to take action. If he still doesn’t hear the ring, the next action will be taken soon in Mumbai.”
The Mumbai Police and other security agencies are investigating the matter, according to media reports.
The first attack at the comedian’s newly opened Kap’s Café occurred on 10 July, when some employees were still inside.
While no injuries were reported, the attack has triggered concern among residents and the Indian diaspora in the area.
Owned by Sharma and named Kap’s Café, the restaurant was opened in early July in Surrey and has quickly become a popular spot for the Indian community.
At least 10 bullet holes were found in a window at the café, while another window pane was shattered in the first attack.
Kap’s Café had said they will stand “firm” against violence to keep the place a symbol of “warmth and community” for its visitors.
In an Instagram post, the café had said: “We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation.”
“To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking,” the café said.
“Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community,” it said.
BKI terrorist Harjit Singh Laddi claimed responsibility for the 10 July firing.
The BKI is recognised as a terrorist outfit by the Canadian government. Laddi is also on the National Investigation Agency’s most-wanted list.
