Indian PM Narendra Modi on Saturday wished the nation on Kargil Vijay Diwas on its 26th anniversary, an event marking the success of the Indian armed forces in ousting Pakistani intruders from the mountains in Kargil.

Modi wrote on X: “Many best wishes to the countrymen on Kargil Vijay Diwas. This occasion reminds us of the unmatched courage and valour of those brave sons of Mother India who dedicated their lives to protect the self-respect of the country. Their passion to die for the motherland will continue to inspire every generation. Jai Hind!”

Indian President Droupadi Murmu wrote on X: “On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the motherland. This day is a symbol of the extraordinary valor, courage and determination of our soldiers. Their dedication and supreme sacrifice for the country will always inspire the countrymen.”

The nation comes together this year to observe the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day that shines like a beacon of pride in India’s history.

In a statement, the Indian government said: “It marks the glorious victory of 1999 when our soldiers, braving snow-clad peaks and relentless enemy fire, reclaimed the heights of Kargil with unmatched courage and unwavering resolve.”

The conflict that came to be known as the Kargil War began in May 1999, when intruders stealthily crossed the Line of Control and occupied Indian posts on towering ridges.

“Their sinister aim was to sever National Highway 1A, the vital artery connecting Srinagar to Leh,” the government said in the statement.

India responded with Operation Vijay, a mission that combined meticulous planning, steely determination, and the indomitable spirit of its soldiers.

For more than two months, Indian forces fought inch by inch across the harshest terrain, until every intruder was driven out and every post restored to Indian control.
