Prime Ministers of India list from 1947 to 2021

Since 1947, India has had 15 prime ministers. Jawaharlal Nehru was India's first prime minister from August 15, 1947 until his death on May 27, 1964, while current PM Narendra Modi is the first one who was born after Indian independence. Here's a list of all prime ministers of India.

Gulzarilal Nanda took over the charge for two short periods following the deaths of Jawaharlal Nehru from May 27, 1964 till June 9, 1964 and Lal Bahadur Shastri from January 11, 1966 to January 2, 1966.

Lal Bahadur Shastri served the nation from June 9, 1964 until his death on January 11, 1966.

A central figure of the Indian National Congress Indira ?Gandhi, the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru served as prime minister from January 24, 1966 to March 24, 1977 and again from January 14, 1980 until her assassination on October 31, 1984.

Morarji Desai became the first non-Congress prime minister. He lead the government formed by the Janta Party between 1977 and 1979.

After Desai resigned in 1979, his former associate Charan Singh briefly held office between July 28, 1979 and January 14, 1980 until the Congress won the 1980 Indian general election and Indira Gandhi returned as prime minister.

Indira Gandhi's son Rajiv Gandhi took office after the 1984 assassination of his mother. In mid-1987, after a general election loss, Rajiv Gandhi's five-year term ended in the 1989 election.

Vishwanath Pratap Singh of the Janta Dal, formed the year-long National Front coalition government in 1989.

A seven-month interlude under prime minister Chandra Shekhar followed, after which the Congress party returned to power, forming the government under PV Narasimha Rao in June 1991, Rajiv Gandhi having been assassinated earlier that year.

PV Narasimha Rao was an Indian lawyer and politician become 9th Prime Minister of India from 1991 to 1996.

Co-founders and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Atal Bihari Vajpayee served three terms as the prime minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004.

HD Deve Gowda started his tenure from June 1,  1996 up till April 21,  1997.

Inder Kumar Gujral served as the 12th prime minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998.

Manmohan Singh was the first Sikh Prime minister of India and served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.

Narendra Modi is an Indian politician serving as the 14th and current prime minister of India since 2014. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation.
