For the first time in 18 years, since it opened its doors in 2002, Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay went dark earlier this month. The National Arts Centre has closed to the public during the COVID-19 circuit breaker period from April 7 to May 4.
However, enthusiasts need not be disappointed because Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay remains steadfast and committed in their mission to bring arts to the people of Singapore even during the coronavirus pandemic.
Esplanade Offstage offers members of the public the opportunity to continue to enjoy access to arts and cultural programmes.
The online all-access backstage pass and insider’s guide to Singapore and Asian arts and culture will help Singaporeans stay in touch with the arts through videos, podcasts and stories as they stay home.
Every Friday, Esplanade will release never-before-seen footage of a performance from its archives as part of The Show Goes On…Line series.
There's also something on offer for children. The young ones can learn from and dance along to engaging videos, quizzes and stories, inspired by the arts and culture of Singapore's multicultural society.
In addition to videos, there are articles and insights on various forms of art and culture such as Kirtan singing, Singapore's own stories of jazz and alternative music over the years.
As Rajeswari Ramachandran, producer of Kalaa Utsavam at Esplanade Co. Ltd. rightly says, "This is a period in our society, when it is probably the best time to turn to the arts for relaxation, solace and positivity".
