Fears of Israeli strike on Iran push US to evacuate personnel

The United States has gone on high alert amid rising concerns that Israel may launch a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. According to local media reports, the Trump administration fears that Israel could act independently without Washington’s approval if talks between the US and Iran break down.

The Washington Post reported that this concern has led to a series of precautionary measures by the US government.

President Donald Trump confirmed that American personnel are being moved out of certain areas in the Middle East, especially Iran, due to the increasing risk of conflict.

The US State Department has allowed some diplomatic staff to leave Iraq, and the Pentagon has authorised military families to voluntarily exit American bases across the region.

These steps come at a time when chances of a nuclear agreement between the US and Iran appear to be slipping, raising fears of another military confrontation in the region following the recent Israel-Hamas conflict.

President Trump repeated his firm opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, stating that the US would not allow Tehran to reach that capability.

Reports last month from Axios indicated that Israel was preparing for a quick strike on Iran in case the negotiations failed. Trump has earlier warned of military action if talks collapse, and in a recent interview, said he was becoming less confident that Iran would agree to halt uranium enrichment, which is a major point of contention.

US intelligence agencies have raised concerns in recent months that Israel may launch a strike without informing Washington in advance. In response, Iran has issued strong warnings, suggesting that any Israeli attack, given the US’ close support for Israel, would result in retaliation against American interests.

Iran’s defence minister warned that any strike on Iranian soil would lead to direct attacks on US military bases in the Middle East.

In preparation for any escalation, the US has ordered embassies within Iran’s missile range, including those in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and North Africa, to activate emergency action committees.

These missions have been directed to report back on security measures and readiness. The State Department has also authorised the voluntary departure of staff from missions in Bahrain and Kuwait.

As the situation continues to develop, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has updated the global travel advisory, citing increased regional tensions and the precautionary departure of non-emergency personnel.
