Chinese firm VIVO has pulled out as the title sponsor for this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League, slated to be held in the UAE from September 19 to November 8.

The move comes after severe backlash faced by the company on social media as a fallout of the clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh in June.

On Sunday reports had emerged that the BCCI was retaining all sponsors of the mega event, a decision taken at the Governing Council meeting.

However, the decision drew a fair amount of criticism in the wake of the prevailing sentiment to boycott Chinese firms and goods after the clashes between the troops.

VIVO had paid INR 2,199 crore for a five-year contract in 2017.
