Dubai to assign star ratings to universities

In a bid to ensure quality education to its students, Dubai has initiated a star rating system for all branches of international universities opened in the emirate. Out of the 17 varsities, only three have received a 5-star rating. 

The rating system is based on the following quality indicators - teaching, employability, research, internationalisation, facilities, overall programme strength, well being, social responsibility and inclusiveness.

Under the new system, the University of Manchester Worldwide was on top with a 5-star rating, followed by London Business School and then Heriot-Watt University.

Indian institutes S P Jain School of Global Management, Amity University Dubai, Manipal University and Birla Insitute of Technology were among those who received a 4-star rating. Other varsities with four stars include Hult International Business School, City University of London, University of Bradford and Middlesex University Dubai. 

University Star rating system explained:

Five star plus: Institution demonstrates all the qualities of a five-star institution. It attracts high-performing students and faculty. Graduates find employment in public and private sectors.

Five star: Institution offers world-class standard of education and demonstrates strengths across all categories. It has highly regarded international research and teaching standards. Graduates are sought after.

Four star: Institution offers excellent standard of education, demonstrates strengths in core and advanced criteria and meets pre-requisites in research and internationalisation. Good job prospects for graduates.

Three star: Institution provides a high standard of education and demonstrates strengths in core criteria categories while showing progress in advanced criteria.

Two star: Institution provides a good standard of education and has demonstrated progress in core criteria categories.

One star: Institution provides a good standard of education and has a good organisational structure.
