Bayern Munich set to sign Indian-origin Kiwi footballer

New Zealand footballer Sarpreet Singh is on the verge of signing a deal that will make him the first Indian-origin player in the German football league, Bundesliga. The Wellington Phoenix striker is set to finalise a three-year deal with Bayern Munich, according to reports.

Sarpreet, who has four appearances for his country to his credit, faced the Indian football team during the 2018 Intercontinental Cup. The left-footed winger set up both his side’s goals in that game as India lost 1-2.

Sarpreet reportedly first caught Bayern Munich officials’ eye as an 11-year-old while playing against one of their youth teams. According to a leaked management plan, he will play for their reserve team in the third division of German football and transition into the main team once he gains experience.

Born in New Zealand to Indian parents, Sarpreet played for Onehunga Sports in his youth before signing for Wellington Phoenix in 2015. At just 20 years old, Singh developed himself into a regular starter for the A-League side, scoring five goals and adding seven assists in 25 appearances. He will also be the first New Zealander to play for the Munich side if signed.
